<br />
I will start out this post with wishing you all a happy and prosperous new years. It's a time of year when many of us make resolutions (some realistic, some not so much!) and I am one of those that fails to stick to them. However, I feel my resolution for this year might be one I will stick to because I can clean up my stash of mags and give to charity/recycle at the same time.<br />
<br />
Reading through various posts on Facebook, I came across a video about cleaning out craft magazines by removing required pages and filing them away. I immediately grabbed a stack of magazines and started going through them. I was amazed at how few pages I pulled out of each magazine - some magazines I pulled out only one page, which means I had at least 60 pages of a magazine for absolutely no reason. For the budget and time conscious in particular, I've devised a few tips to make the job easier.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>When you have a spare half hour, pull out a small stack of magazines and go through them, scanning pages for pictures, ideas, tutes or contact details that interest you. If you come across any e-directories, it may be worth checking out whether the links still work before bothering to rip it out.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Once you've finished going through all the mags, separate them into various categories that suit you. This might include headings/sub headings such as "Techniques", "Inspirational", "Design Templates" - under a heading like "Techniques" you could then sub-categorise into "Embossing", "Inking", "Stamping" etc.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li> Purchase a ring binder, (or several depending on stash size), A4 clear sleeves suitable for the binder and cheap A4 paper (it can be coloured if you wish). If the page you've ripped from the mag is the full A4 size, slide it into the approriate category and label accordiningly. If it's too large, trim down or if it's too small, stick it to the A4 paper using double sided tape.</li>
</ul>
I'm hoping that I will have my filing finished by the end of January - or maybe February! - ensuring I won't have to search for ideas or techniques, it'll all be at my finger tips. The binders can be added to as you aquire more magazines, and you can donate the leftovers to charity or recycling, depending on how much you gut the mag.<br />
<br />
Happy filing folks!!! Real effort needs to go into losing stash weight.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As I look in what has become my craft corner I often feel a little bit of shame, evidence that a crafty person lives here is clear, but its starting to look like that crafty person may be hoarding supplies. Glancing over the stack of organised chaos I see 2 skeins of earth friendly fair trade yarn, I try and think - what on earth was I going to make with that. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I know I’ve done it several times, buying materials or ingredients for projects but never finding the time to make them up. Or even worse, forgetting that I had already had one or two of the materials at home and buying them again.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">So I challenge you to join me. Take a look in your stash and lets loose some stash weight in the name of Christmas. Perhaps a Christmas Decorations, stocking fillers or even a present.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Lets see if collectively we can make a bunch of things from our stash, cutting our costs and easing the dreaded Christmas crafting rush.</span></b>

Last year I purchased a loft bed for my room, it has a cupboard, shelving and a desk. One thing that I did not consider however, was where was I going to put things like my mobile, TV remote or other personal effects now that I could no longer reach my bedside chest of drawers?<br />
<br />
I decided to make myself a bed caddy - I searched for tutorials to suit my bed but found none, so invented my own. Most bed caddies seem to be tucked under the mattress but since loft and bunk beds have rails, tucking it under the mattress wasn't much use to me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I simply took a bright red pillow case, folded it in half and pinned where I wanted the pockets to me. I made them slightly different sizes so I could fit my mobile, tv remote, a small paper back and a "bits n pieces" pocket. I sewed the lines vertically from the fold. I also cut four pieces of binding tape I had lying around, I did not use specific measurements but rather placed the binding over the rail where I wanted it to sit and then guestimated the length needed. I attached each strap to the back of each pocket, and placed velcro on the front pieces, matching the velcro to the front of the pillow case. Having four straps allows the weight to be distributed evenly - I make sure I only place things in the outer pockets that will fit without me having to pull off the straps - the other two pockets can have their straps pulled off without it affecting anything. As you can see in the below picture, one of the straps has been detached from it's velcro but the other three straps take the weight.<br />

This is a picture of a bed that is the same model as mine and I have drawn in where I placed my bed caddy. My bed was a bit messy which is why there are erased bits, but the red and blue bit is where the caddy sits.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is my comfy cardi. The warm one for wearing around the house. I have had this for years.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizZGtdKzFkj6gsIdcGrCFlFhuGilsku2ukwYbmAtaKqUCjF51FHfs6Dcx6unK5ysjzEQHmF3xh4Fsj0pgXFivPPJRhONMXHiNYvS0PuS9RMZvFt-zQNsBCNZTGJVZKTbj6daG47bKS-y0/s1600/IMG_9429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizZGtdKzFkj6gsIdcGrCFlFhuGilsku2ukwYbmAtaKqUCjF51FHfs6Dcx6unK5ysjzEQHmF3xh4Fsj0pgXFivPPJRhONMXHiNYvS0PuS9RMZvFt-zQNsBCNZTGJVZKTbj6daG47bKS-y0/s320/IMG_9429.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's starting to look well worn with pilling.<br />It's time to do something about it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrtmiW1NSPThWRGpiHNGiNQnR5PD1zAryfa-y_wOjOEPI_zDjaw8Egy6DUsPAbA79tX3D7KX6jG8U99cysnCLBoMiGvgihUdVsK0lxvyjCmClpRLlwfoVoYdurhiqDWPfrgHeIUhXpXkQ/s1600/IMG_9430.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrtmiW1NSPThWRGpiHNGiNQnR5PD1zAryfa-y_wOjOEPI_zDjaw8Egy6DUsPAbA79tX3D7KX6jG8U99cysnCLBoMiGvgihUdVsK0lxvyjCmClpRLlwfoVoYdurhiqDWPfrgHeIUhXpXkQ/s320/IMG_9430.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can get yourself one of these things. They have multiple names.<br />Usually a depiller or pill remover</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizN59Gxj2uqThcSp7gnD20JbJGl4fCx-LNzm2ns5OaQq6GJIqMHx3fP-rwoQPzK3-P7S-mBfKNhZUAE7P-hwN2HP8XYxQY63hffNOCEo9PyAD02bJaF2kioYQAapaDoV5J-oy_V0s6GZs/s1600/IMG_9431.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizN59Gxj2uqThcSp7gnD20JbJGl4fCx-LNzm2ns5OaQq6GJIqMHx3fP-rwoQPzK3-P7S-mBfKNhZUAE7P-hwN2HP8XYxQY63hffNOCEo9PyAD02bJaF2kioYQAapaDoV5J-oy_V0s6GZs/s320/IMG_9431.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Or you can just grab one of these from your bathroom cupboard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whichever you choose to use, you will need to have the garment on a flat hard surface.<br />Make sure you hold the fabric of the garment at the same time so the fabric doesn't move.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Work in small areas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This will take quite a while if your cardi is as bad as mine but, you will be able to make it look decent once more</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Desperate housewive's quilt - Nilmerg</h2>
<h3>
My contribution: the 'Button Bug'</h3>
<br />
I was invited by quiltjane to design an 8" block to be part of her desperate housewive's quilt. You can read all about her project to collect 100 blocks, 50 designed by herself and 50 from guest bloggers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://quiltjane.blogspot.com.au/p/desperate-housewifes-quilt.html">http://quiltjane.blogspot.com.au/p/desperate-housewifes-quilt.html</a><br />
<br />
My block, which I have called 'button bug', was based on a design by the Handiwerx blog <a href="http://handiwerx.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/ladybug-paper-pieced-pattern.html">http://handiwerx.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/ladybug-paper-pieced-pattern.html</a> It combines my favourite insect and my favourite crafting supply - buttons!<br />
<br />
Since this block isn't quite 8" square, I had to adapt the pattern a little by adding extra width and height on the background.<br />
<br />
Once that was done, I got onto the fabric choices. I decided on a cute button fabric and a blue leaf fabric for the background.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzGizQwROrAa3EE3cT-wW8a3lnl36IJRnOrgiQEYnXLvbiwOhwtmHPINbIIT74qW3VaUb1sSFJcTFOOVUs5IG5_t8E8zclnM7j91tdJHd7VMkJTgbWc35crEl7iIjmNBiPfl1T-L574ec/s1600/IMG_4037.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzGizQwROrAa3EE3cT-wW8a3lnl36IJRnOrgiQEYnXLvbiwOhwtmHPINbIIT74qW3VaUb1sSFJcTFOOVUs5IG5_t8E8zclnM7j91tdJHd7VMkJTgbWc35crEl7iIjmNBiPfl1T-L574ec/s320/IMG_4037.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I cut apart my paper pattern and cut the fabric to size:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirPxfG-moEfK79uZYaYK2Qsj-cp0WONl3zJhLA9GCWvXOZEZlydX1w0K8exPW-IqQQ-5T-CnCqddeIssK0oFbAexUH1wUhDYrBtiOLRqtscb-xa53scgtqaSE9g592eV3gXpCTMwypIR4/s1600/IMG_4038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirPxfG-moEfK79uZYaYK2Qsj-cp0WONl3zJhLA9GCWvXOZEZlydX1w0K8exPW-IqQQ-5T-CnCqddeIssK0oFbAexUH1wUhDYrBtiOLRqtscb-xa53scgtqaSE9g592eV3gXpCTMwypIR4/s320/IMG_4038.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Once I started sewing, it came together really quickly:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyk8SfHHK6Qs0D9BbL_kyjroCqDNX-ISuUos7f4bqLfjJ2JLPQrMgOu4whQ7yO_PIgh4lZ9pYS2fuGPDS-oi7NJJLnC5JkSdzKkW8_1FzrYJ6cwIpSHhEGdVC4i1dFFy_EvG7hrcH5rMM/s1600/IMG_4051.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyk8SfHHK6Qs0D9BbL_kyjroCqDNX-ISuUos7f4bqLfjJ2JLPQrMgOu4whQ7yO_PIgh4lZ9pYS2fuGPDS-oi7NJJLnC5JkSdzKkW8_1FzrYJ6cwIpSHhEGdVC4i1dFFy_EvG7hrcH5rMM/s320/IMG_4051.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwWUMfivZuv8aqbbkh9tHxfOn4l_TME57c_U9AXn91W_rjpcPF2h0jIvviq-S5AzKDmGWwiA8CwqyHXkwegKPaBJifqvKsBSu1wU7rgK5Pi3fOxNfuFYVKZ2aJMdysBby4dUuwATL-PGg/s1600/IMG_4052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwWUMfivZuv8aqbbkh9tHxfOn4l_TME57c_U9AXn91W_rjpcPF2h0jIvviq-S5AzKDmGWwiA8CwqyHXkwegKPaBJifqvKsBSu1wU7rgK5Pi3fOxNfuFYVKZ2aJMdysBby4dUuwATL-PGg/s320/IMG_4052.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then all that was left to do was to add the detail, legs and antenna and my button bug was all finished. I decided to use my new darning foot to add these details. It is a really fun new way to use my sewing machine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXRLjDUxVN71BWG_R-nzUFOpm7RzArWAi3ZzEC8BRKs_zaCZOyTPXkG3_dgGjunGTnMNzhadXm0lfRnEsENWCEwpg01jizclckAVaUrsugrGsWBOrxDAVn8RlnnZwiMF__RIdI8O1Q408/s1600/IMG_4054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXRLjDUxVN71BWG_R-nzUFOpm7RzArWAi3ZzEC8BRKs_zaCZOyTPXkG3_dgGjunGTnMNzhadXm0lfRnEsENWCEwpg01jizclckAVaUrsugrGsWBOrxDAVn8RlnnZwiMF__RIdI8O1Q408/s320/IMG_4054.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And the finished 'Button bug' block:</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd highly recommend this Handiworks block for a really easy and quick to put together paper pieced block. Thank you so much Jane for allowing me to be part of your project. I'd love to see what you do with all these blocks once it's complete.</div>

<li><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">To make $200 in a week (not including the $100 week challenge) </span></li>

<li><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Its probably very important for me to note that I am a trained Baker and currently hold both NSW and ACT food business registrations and all the relevant licenses, insurance and certification to sell baked goods from my home kitchen. I do plan on selling baked goods as a part of this challenge, and I know it might seem a little unfair that I’m counting this towards my challenge but I look at it in the light that it is a craft that I do at home and my licenses, insurance and the most important (and required) certifications probably cost the same as an embroidery sewing machine or knitting machine.</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="background-color: transparent; background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-weight: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span><br /><ul>
<li><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I’m also going to be using traditional crafts like Crochet, Papercraft’s, Sewing (if I can figure out my machine) and Knitting - pretty much any craft I could do to make some money.</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="background-color: transparent; background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-weight: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-weight: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">So thats my plan. You can join my challenge if you like, changing your own rules to suit you and your craft. But if you are going to try it out with me, take it on with a knowledge that you have set down some goals you know you are going to be able to reach and then set down some higher goals that are going to stretch you. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t reach your goals, take it all in as a learning experience and enjoy the ride :)</span>

<br />
It's been a while since I've written a post but thought I would write and let you know all about my new crafting hobby - bobbin lace making! This is a lace textile made using a particular method of twisting and crossing threads with tools called bobbins and while the end result looks similar to tatting, the method itself is very different. Bobbin lace is also called pillow or bone lace, the latter because the bobbins used to be made of bone or ivory, and evolved in the 16th century Italy from braid making.<br />
<br />
The picture below shows a partially completed book mark that includes foot side, using the Torchon style - this means it usually follows a geometric pattern, such as the diamonds and lines shown on the pattern. The bobbins are not usually tied up as mine are in the picture, this was taken after I'd started to pack up my board.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH1QTT7kAcWdsgUjA3mRfroz0uUc1yBo5T1STlI1m6a-Tl2ktynoqc5qstWPwi-uJXNeadIkwHGfpji7ciFuYMCInySQYMXBnPqC91FtIFsVOaS9yFOIPV2gkfhyphenhyphenX1PNDPAWQzktgEDEIp/s1600/428618_10150731079195358_571415357_11857207_1495842486_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH1QTT7kAcWdsgUjA3mRfroz0uUc1yBo5T1STlI1m6a-Tl2ktynoqc5qstWPwi-uJXNeadIkwHGfpji7ciFuYMCInySQYMXBnPqC91FtIFsVOaS9yFOIPV2gkfhyphenhyphenX1PNDPAWQzktgEDEIp/s320/428618_10150731079195358_571415357_11857207_1495842486_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Many people have told me this looks like a complicated craft, and I agree that it does LOOK it, however the actual technique is not very confusing at all. This particular pattern requires fourteen pairs of bobbins that have been wound in a clock wise direction on one piece of thread - rule of thumb is the thread should be 4 times the length of the pattern, you wind one end of a bobbin, apply a slip knot and leave a length of approximately 15-20cm. Using a second bobbin, wind the end of the thread (that's attached to the first bobbin) clockwise onto the secondary bobbin, leaving a 20cm gap between the bobbins on the thread. Repeat this technique for each pair of bobbins until all are done. Each pattern can have a different way of starting, youtube and google are excellent for patterns and tips.<br />
<br />
Using a working board, the next step requires a tool which looks like a needle with a handle attached - however you can use a plain large needle but the handle is useful if you suffer from carpal tunnel etc. My pattern above had clear contact applied before I used four pins to hold it down. I then pricked each of the little black holes on it, this helps for later on when the pins are inserted to hold the lace in place while you work.<br />
<br />
Once the bobbins are wound and are attached to the first pin you can then begin the process of the stitches. While there are several different stitches that can be moved, there are only ever four bobbins used at a time (the rest are irrelevant if not being used in a stitch) and there are only two moves, the cross and the twist - which can be done in a variety of ways to create different stitches.<br />
<br />
For this particular bookmark I used the following stitches:<br />
Footside: this is the edge of the piece, which run vertical down the sides.<br />
Cloth work: the technique used to complete the diamonds, it looks like a tight weave. You can also complete this stitch using a half stitch which results in more of a basket weave look.<br />
Ground: Stitches used outside motifs like the diamonds, this holds the lace piece together<br />

There are <em>heaps </em>of other tutorials and methods of making circles, this is just how I like to do them. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">First - decide how big you want your circle. For my project, I needed 5inch circles (to fit in a 6inch quilt block). I have a circle template for the 5in I needed, however, I regularly use a compass to draw them or trace around whatever I can find around my house - eg. Baby formula tins, spools of thread, dinner plates.</span><br />

And the best thing....... It only has four ingredients! <br />
<br />
You will need:<br />
500g packet of dried pasta ( we love spirals the best) <br />
1 420g can of cream of chicken condensed soup (the cream of chicken and mushroom is yum too)<br />
About a cup of shredded, cooked BBQ chicken or cook some chicken before hand. <br />
About a cup of shredded cheese. <br />
<br />
Cook the dried pasta using the instructions on the packet. <br />
Drain pasta and combine with soup, chicken, and a third of the cheese. <br />
Place in baking dish and cover with the rest of the cheese. <br />
Bake in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 to 20 mins. <br />
<br />
<br />
Chicken can be substituted for canned tuna or salmon and frozen veggies can be added when combining all ingredients. <br />

<br />
This is my first tutorial for 2012, I hope you really like it and find it useful. This is excellent for those scrappy bits of fabric you don't want to chuck out but don't want to waste either. This technique is called Chenilling and is excellent for bags, table/place mats and could even be used in quilt squares.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Items required:</b></u><br />
<br />
<ul><li>Sewing machine (if you're really keen you could hand stitch it)</li>
<li>Thread and needle suitable for sewing through several layers of material</li>
<li>Fabric - this can be any fabric you like in any shape you like, as long as there are at least 4 pieces the same size. Aim to have at least one plain colour piece for the lining. I personally did a piece with 4 layers of fabric sandwiched together so my tutorial will only reference 4 pieces, however I do know someone who successfully did it with 7 layers. </li>
<li>Something to mark lines with</li>
<li>Ruler</li>
<li>Sharp long scissors</li>
</ul><br />
<br />
<u><b>Method:</b></u><br />
<b><u>Step One: </u></b>Cut your material to the same size, and sandwich the pieces together with a plain piece on the bottom. In my example, I chose black for the bottom, an orange/white for the second layer, a plain blue for the next layer, and a cute country pattern layer for the top. Line up the pieces so they are even and pin them in a sandwich.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqDeEfVRgyivdJR0MDl3Lkra41XhRirLFvgww5FTVqSVenGdZUX_a2CXQbSBPSyySkttJ18bX5YP1KHfWOxMCbfwRcxyoYUdfllv3WY371Hj087xf40DA9k7RVbccUDZQERbG8hbEAjwWR/s1600/IMAG0041.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqDeEfVRgyivdJR0MDl3Lkra41XhRirLFvgww5FTVqSVenGdZUX_a2CXQbSBPSyySkttJ18bX5YP1KHfWOxMCbfwRcxyoYUdfllv3WY371Hj087xf40DA9k7RVbccUDZQERbG8hbEAjwWR/s400/IMAG0041.jpg" width="225" /></a></div><b><u>Step Two:</u></b><br />
Starting at one corner, measure across the lining piece diagonally and mark. Then mark a diagonal line 1 inch on either side of the middle line. Continue this across the lining piece until it looks like the picture shown below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicZbVZ6DlLAGk_hak8QkJucaCxMX8Ew9gdWT5NM5VNWggOA5SIWM_LgAEvfWHcVG0IQGBtrHYASBjaD11HkDb4iKd43VinfyNdxnJTRgQEh_E9np7ud1KHkWK_TTcItechb5YfFmSyzVN5/s1600/IMAG0042.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicZbVZ6DlLAGk_hak8QkJucaCxMX8Ew9gdWT5NM5VNWggOA5SIWM_LgAEvfWHcVG0IQGBtrHYASBjaD11HkDb4iKd43VinfyNdxnJTRgQEh_E9np7ud1KHkWK_TTcItechb5YfFmSyzVN5/s320/IMAG0042.jpg" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><u>Step Three:</u></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Once you've completed that, using your machine (or hands) sew the first middle diagonal line, through all four layers. Continue stitching the first line on the right, then the line on the left, and stitch diagonally across so it looks like the picture below. Continue through until all the lines have been stitched.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi39hbU1Jy8YTsj2Bn2zrHen7tbxUq3TDUsIJEDciXANFPR3glOkT5zsigVLpZzOPM5PE_MAswYblBAlNe-5gihNZ8j8f3x-zNWyHoMvNSF91JD_kS1AjhliMe3nEqk1neBmqxoOR6xx11G/s1600/IMAG0043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi39hbU1Jy8YTsj2Bn2zrHen7tbxUq3TDUsIJEDciXANFPR3glOkT5zsigVLpZzOPM5PE_MAswYblBAlNe-5gihNZ8j8f3x-zNWyHoMvNSF91JD_kS1AjhliMe3nEqk1neBmqxoOR6xx11G/s320/IMAG0043.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><b><u> Step Four:</u></b><br />
For this step, you will require your scissors again. To complete the step, you need to cut the top three layers of fabric (not the lining) between the lines, Carefully slide of the scissor blades in between the bottom layer and the top three layers, as shown below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6JRMmNnmCQLv_CF2D5oDJmfAfNTqqK5JNr51K6dgyVxO63Ei2oXTuoLb0gtVoGCxDZcD6T2KAEf6X4j37-iLNydxgeFgvimPb2o-mckKsjyjZr1HPUZfoTjsLzVGsgPStXuZIsqssXzZc/s1600/IMAG0045.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6JRMmNnmCQLv_CF2D5oDJmfAfNTqqK5JNr51K6dgyVxO63Ei2oXTuoLb0gtVoGCxDZcD6T2KAEf6X4j37-iLNydxgeFgvimPb2o-mckKsjyjZr1HPUZfoTjsLzVGsgPStXuZIsqssXzZc/s320/IMAG0045.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Sm3XsfVstwA94EJEdlND0B24NipgPlbRWXLpHnVpLIFP9TtXiMyvkNFTxIlCCkb4ZADwoNtAHG0XeZA2zTBxcTro6BLSvOM0RPyi5lbAc9xLvU5BvS8aETQy6S4eNcbAplPNdb1WUeRb/s1600/Chenilling.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Sm3XsfVstwA94EJEdlND0B24NipgPlbRWXLpHnVpLIFP9TtXiMyvkNFTxIlCCkb4ZADwoNtAHG0XeZA2zTBxcTro6BLSvOM0RPyi5lbAc9xLvU5BvS8aETQy6S4eNcbAplPNdb1WUeRb/s400/Chenilling.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I found the easiest way to hold it while cutting was to slide the blade under the top three layers, then pinch the material around the blade - as shown below. Both have very effective results. You can either choose to roll in a hem, or you can insert it into a bag to secure the loose edges.<br />

<br />
After all the excitement and busyness of Christmas we took our kids away for a week of camping and I did zero crafting... Yep, I said ZERO! Nothing, nada, zilch.. <br />
I can't remember the last time I had a complete break from everything, but it was AWESOME!<br />
<br />
I have returned from holiday creatively refreshed and almost bursting with excitement with all the things I want to make this year! I am finding so many inspiring projects online (esp on pinterest, Facebook groups and Craftster) <br />
Towards the end of last year, I made plans to lay off the Craft Swaps in 2012 - now here I am, almost at the end of January and I have already committed myself to 3 Craftster swaps, 5 on Swap-bot, 2 personal swaps, a Quilt Bee and 2 Quilt-a-longs! At this rate, I should be done with my <em><a href="http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=395702.msg4713379#msg4713379" target="_blank">50 in 2012</a></em> (another craft-a-long) by Easter! <br />
<br />
-- Oh, and inbetween all the crafting, I'm learning how to Blog!! Looking forward to sharing plenty of ideas, tips, tutorials and random crafty goodness here at <em>Handmaden's</em> in 2012. <br />

As complicated as they look they are really quite quick and shirring is totally addictive!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://pretty-ditty.blogspot.com/2009/04/smockingshirring-tutorial.html">This is the tutorial for the shirring</a> and it worked a treat. My only issue (that was ongoing for about an hour before I face-palmed at my oversight) was that the elastic in the bobbin was not feeding correctly, the elastic was pulled out of its little niche in the bobbin holder and this caused the elastic thread to bunch up on the underside of the fabric. Once I kept an eye on the bobbin, ensuring the thread was in place the shirring went like a breeze.<br />
<br />
I kept my thread length at about 2 and had my bobbin tension around 2.5 on my Janome MyExcel machine. It took very little practise to find the thread length and bobbin tension that worked best.<br />
<br />
I made 7 dresses in total and an extra top for Christmas day. The top is a little different and a bit fancier but once you have made the basic dresses, you will see how the top was made. The first dress was a bit long, my daughter is only nine months and not walking yet so I didn't want something that would catch her legs. My first attempt was also too slim. It fit fine in the chest but it was not roomy enough to accommodate a nappy bum!<br />

<u><br /></u></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
One of the biggest things I wanted as a child was family dinners. I just loved the idea of a huge table, everyone gathered, sharing stories of their day, jokes they might have heard, goals and dreams they might have planned. The idea was so magical to me.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When we had Megan (my crafted mini me) I would bring her out and lay her in her reclining highchair. Even if she was asleep we would bring her out, sit her next to us at the table while my husband and I ate and chatted about our day. We did this from birth with all of our kiddies and our dream was to always have these family meal times. But as kiddies grow older and my husband became such an important computer fixer, they started having these social, spiritual or sport commitments and next thing I knew 7 nights of family dinners had turned into 3 or 4.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To keep the dream alive (so to speak) and to dedicate set time for family fun we created Friday Family Fun Night. A night to enjoy together, it didn't matter where we were or what we were doing, it just mattered that we were doing it together and having fun. Sometimes we would go out, sometimes we would grab a pizza and watch a movie but lately my daughter has been having a lot of fun with "Megan's Restaurant"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's how it works. We pick a country or cuisine that we would like to try and my daughter and I research until we find a yummy menu. Then we make our shopping list and go on the inevitable treasure hunt for obscure ingredients. This - for us - is half the fun for Family Fun Night.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the Friday I will pick her up from school and she will come bouncing home - so excited for "Megan's Restaurant". I'll be busy cooking in the kitchen and she will be setting the table - including name tags, "fancy" glassware and plates, serving platter (if needed) organising the bread and the drinks - all the fancy tasks of a restaurant manager :-)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This Family Fun Night we will be having a Brazilian feast.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Brazilian Black Bean Stew recipe found <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Brazilian-Black-Bean-Stew/Detail.aspx">here</a></div>
<div>
Brazilian White Rice recipe found <a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/brazilian-white-rice/detail.aspx">here</a></div>
<div>
Päo De Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Bread) recipe found <a href="http://www.yumsugar.com/52-Weeks-Baking-Brazilian-Cheese-Bread-280828">here</a></div>
<div>
Brazilian Lemonade recipe found <a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/brazilian-lemonade/detail.aspx">here</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
And for dessert, a Lime Pie recipe found <a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/key-lime-pie-vii/detail.aspx">here</a>. Now looking at the recipe it does say Key Lime Pie but we can't get Key Limes here in Australia, so really it will be a Lime Pie. Key limes are quite different to our limes, when they are ripe they have a pale green to yellow skin, they are also smaller then the limes we are used to and have a stronger tartness. </div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Tonight I will post some photos of our Brazilian Feast.</div>

I love to craft things and take part in way to many forum based craft swaps for my own good, but recently I decided that I should at least put myself out there with the hope of selling some items. I am lucky enough to have a local shop that stocks all sorts of vintage and handmade items. The owner kindly agreed to stock items for me and pay me on a monthly basis when anything sells. I also have a facebook page, where I'm hoping to make contact with people from a bit further afield and today, I reached 50 likers!!!!! And as I promiced from the start I'm having a giveaway to celebrate!</div><div> </div><div> </div><div>You have the oportunity to win this pink owl set - a phone sleeve and a coin/cards purse, including postage. Are you still crafting for Christmas? Did you finish it all yet? Or will you still be crafting when Santa arrives tonight?!</div><div> </div><div>So with Christmas just around the corner, I feel the pressure building. While I love giving handmade gifts for Christmas, I'm just not finished!!!!! I managed to get all the gifts done for others, but the applique t-shirts for my daughters are still only half done (although I'm very happy with how they are turning out) and I've only made one of the 3 fabric world globes that I need to, I'm wondering if I will get finished in time. And then there is the skirt that is half done that I had intended to wear tomorrow, but I think that may remain unfinished until another day! And to top it all off, I've run out of wrapping paper, so the kids and I are off to brave the shops and try to pick up some more! My unfinished projects:</div><div> </div><div> <img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 400px; height: 225px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689450061192149970" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRBhf39Rz9Lek3V5fTSedv6TvNKNsYIBWtNE-0-ABpYBtS4qRhf0HAXsq9pug4NLZ9lIcHq5FcIqGDqQXVjI1xPsrwERr5yR3RulikHLQ_SEfEFE6sG-ALB62bJnfn9OJdElVzaP1_BCQ/s400/IMG_3053.JPG" /></div><div> </div><div>On the other hand, projects that I have completed are:</div><div>- Roll up chalk mat for DD2</div><div>- Applique caterpiller t-shirt for Friend's daughter</div><div>- Applique flower t-shirt for another friends daughter</div><div>- Superman Applique t-shirt for SIL</div><div>- 3 commissioned I-spy bags (and a 4th one for a birthday!)</div><div>- 2 x 18" cushion covers for my Mum & Dad</div><div>- A 16" cushion cover for each of the in-laws</div><div>- one 18" fabric globe (I'm really hoping to get the other 2 finished today!)</div><div>- a chalkcoard scrap t-shirt for DD1 and DD2</div><div>- a Dino stuffy for nephew</div><div>- Bags of reindeer noses for various friends</div><div>- Oreo truffles and oreo cupcakes (still to be packaged and delivered today!)</div><div> </div><div>So all in all, while I'm feeling very overwhelmed with what I still have to do, writing this list has really helped me see what I have achieved. So if you are a bit overwhelmed with christmas, as well as writing the 'to do' list, maybe you should write a 'done' list too, it might make you feel a bit better too!</div><div> </div><div>Have a good one, Nilmerg / Elaine</div></div></div>nilmerghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14778888976052797519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-866994631940304253.post-24706190984255730552011-12-23T23:26:00.002+11:002011-12-24T00:32:53.530+11:00Foody Friday - Christmas SweetsFor the last Foody Friday before Christmas Im going to share some quick sweets. <br />

<div><div><div><div><div><div><div>Hi All, Nilmerg here. Christmas is fast approaching and at 8:30 this morning, I realised that my daughter was going to her last day of preschool for the year. I get on really well with the wonderful teachers and other staff at the Preschool so I was wishing I'd made them something. Then I had a brain wave, why not make them some reindeer noses (inspired by the ever inspiring pinterest)! <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685921706092210898" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSP9ocDxKYYQsDORvN664_xMuWxZdKiAlCP5Ohgll8mVGdbsH0js9HDurVT9fskiEZF1QPVNcl-k86GpobZTH4Q8JMwwI2L9GzhAg7eCShIc2pseuSKEyhz4vDY5PYEQ9GoMoBZvl3yb4/s400/reindeer-noses.gif" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 303px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 246px;" /></div><div></div><div>What you will need:</div><div><strong></strong></div><div>1 bag maltesers</div><div>1 bag jaffas</div><div>small ziplock or cellophane bags</div><div>1 sheet of Christmas coloured card</div><div>glue & stapler</div><div></div><div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685930898381509058" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnV1zSJJE0aeGyNQo2xi34dtKLm8XHx7CLCh17CV4D2533xm8pWvUMAsxE0wSXiGdotoGy_LA39trJ0ooMWaanlZ4UZO2C7fFEoe47yhz5UyNtfTfM_DQ21t0aIhjliUHoibg626Hm6S0/s400/ingredients.gif" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 209px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 250px;" /></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Ok, so first thing you need to know, there are 9 Reindeers. I know, I googled it and wikipedia told me (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus</a>)!</div><div></div><div>So you will put into a bag 8 maltesers for the 8 normal reindeer (that's Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen) and one red jaffa nose for good olde Rudolph. Making a huge investment total of 9 lollies per bag. Seal the bag.</div><div></div><div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685924839381351426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5TwFJ85znNjyYq5pDnWfX8U1xrypI7_oY9eB8-tScCZLSZRbV-AkkjQ5vZ0fxRWulhLvKWxglpyxzGLLnhdezaVQSLcp2rPPcULXLsyRktuXXjga3FmLIm9pYLHGf8gkQhBoRB3cXiqo/s400/fill-bag.gif" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 190px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 141px;" /></div><div></div><div>Cut your Christmas coloured card into pieces as wide as your bag an at least 3" long. Fold the card in half (so it remains the length of the bag.</div><div></div><div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685927132613666034" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsCs6LnWqDOIp2OxHv9b2FO-Nsf9tWn24ulv6VkjInPXa7BBZUM2z-x99pej3ES_Vd10m6kxD8kqPpvOjZFG8daFiTpcZVtBgkuFDSb829e9qpoNyeUN7uI68uUWVzHIyRrnaUrGBN8DQ/s400/card.gif" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 127px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 191px;" /></div><div></div><div>Go to your word processing or art programme and find a cute clip art image of a reindeer and a cute font. Combine to form a small sticker sized image and print, see below. (If you don't have access to a computer or printer and you are artistic you could draw and write the labels)</div><div></div><div>I then chose to rip my little sticker sized descriptions from the paper in an artistic fashion. You could use scissors or even some of those fancy scrapbooking scissors to get a different look.</div><div></div><div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685928417900277634" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrLwmCpGtaMFRWA7ZzPEvXaToeIlzoeu4bhl41ynUgYNL5CG3I9LxhI7jEX6eWq0KGEPvYuP3sXDVRTmRzRj17cbkSvbze_W9kbBLUzCImHOsMHZ75WgWN6SqGfvmG3hpiqjiznxlZvCg/s400/IMG_2987.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 128px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 266px;" /></div><div></div><div>Glue the cut / torn out piece to the front of the card, then fold it over the top of the bag and staple into place.</div><div></div><div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685930078306768402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP3l9q2S4HX-e8Y8F8OyZW7w9WeRNIHAzDuPukt24OuCPG8vi-qaRfSR2xpXJYdddwf5BP0EE4TT9FkuGuDX-CMDaAoLNq2qLG_7cmyLNTMGwHmPoqQ1xnSQCV4sq039kaVNBkzJttkog/s400/IMG_2988.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 180px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 294px;" /></div><div></div><div>And guess what! You are done!!!!!!</div><div></div><div>The 3 teachers in my DD's classroom were thrilled with their gifts. I think that they appreciated that there had been more thought put into it than just a box of chocolates.</div><div></div><div>I'll be using this quick and easy gift for all those people who you feel that you ought to give a gift to, but don't want to spend a whole heap of money on. Like the neighbours kids, or your work colleagues kids (or maybe even your work colleagues!), teachers, teacher's aides, acquaintances from playgroups, as a sweet extra treat for those friends children who are not allowed too many lollies, children at your church or community group, and the list goes on.</div><div></div><div>I hope I've provided you with a quick, easy and inexpensive gift that might come in handy this season. If I don't blog again before the big day, Merry Christmas.</div><div></div><div>Nilmerg / Elaine</div><div></div><div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>nilmerghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14778888976052797519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-866994631940304253.post-63082996093495654822011-12-12T00:41:00.001+11:002011-12-12T13:04:11.622+11:00It's time for a giveaway!<br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">These simple to sew Christmas birds add a traditional touch to any Christmas decorating; they also make a great gift for newlyweds celebrating their first Christmas together, or why not make some smaller birds as well for couples with a new baby. But don’t just limit these birdies to Christmas! Whip them up in some fun fabrics for sweet little decorations all year round! ~Caitlan</span></div>

Methods:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxrUL_WrpJrwLPJNgu-s8RMy7km1OCTtyp5spsKicZn6ipkMLHUU2vvWRWmOpV9ewWJnf5zOPqw7Yc3Pq2lt3BXG2OT76XPzekXB-2u0iHp30LohZVKWhQFy7vFxHeFG9OMmXMnoWMHX7-/s1600/IMAG1096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a>Pine cones -<br />

If the pine cones you've found have damage like this: don't despair. You can always turn the damage towards the back or, if the damage is quite bad, use a ribbon or similar embellishment to disguise the damage.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDsSwbGT_3LkrPSHoFBEIvmKqrHz27vx4RaYSSOMhtdIeMeOZt3cUq_REU3W5Bhpfl9EwjLyXjslsxi0lgV0i40DqGbx7zRuD08VqAwd227ooxFnPswoDTlPBiMDaYe0DLFpcWck2MUAhJ/s1600/IMAG1103.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDsSwbGT_3LkrPSHoFBEIvmKqrHz27vx4RaYSSOMhtdIeMeOZt3cUq_REU3W5Bhpfl9EwjLyXjslsxi0lgV0i40DqGbx7zRuD08VqAwd227ooxFnPswoDTlPBiMDaYe0DLFpcWck2MUAhJ/s320/IMAG1103.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
In <b>method one </b>shown on the left, I chose to go with the non-traditional colour of blue mixed with a little green to make a lovely blue-turquoise colour. I then painted the Black Opal glitter paint over the top in places as a highlighter rather than covering all the blue paint. <br />
<br />
In <b>method two</b> in the middle, I painted a plain pinecone in Black Opal glitter paint - this is kind of a clear paint so it kept the natural colour of the pine cone while adding a bit of glitz.<br />
<br />
In <b>method three</b> on the right, I used a red paint and red glitter for a traditional look on the pine cone. If you like traditional colours, you could choose to do one in silver and one in green.<br />
<br />
Other methods you might like to try out are using thin tinsel, pom poms (home made or bought), miniature Christmas decorations, small pieces of holly.<br />
<br />
<br />
For the<b> candles</b>, I also did a couple of other methods:<br />
<br />
For the<b> first method </b>on the left, I wrapped some old Christmas-themed wrapping paper and trimmed to size, before double sided sticky taping it onto the candle. I did not attach the paper to the candle, but overlapped the paper so the paper can be slid off the candle easily - this means you can move the paper and trim accordingly as the candle burns down, or remove it completely to use the candle for another purpose.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcH6-qLuNiII0C5tOjAuTxFAg6zRUVemJA-ViqSQMl0gvRLLc8fYCecMc5Rw2nExqNoh2rm0EDkTmWZxjeSm-VuukO3wzl00c8cwwCOd-ALKL_ZrS1_XuJxGSFUnzhuiGWHEbO8-PkKde6/s1600/IMAG1097.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcH6-qLuNiII0C5tOjAuTxFAg6zRUVemJA-ViqSQMl0gvRLLc8fYCecMc5Rw2nExqNoh2rm0EDkTmWZxjeSm-VuukO3wzl00c8cwwCOd-ALKL_ZrS1_XuJxGSFUnzhuiGWHEbO8-PkKde6/s320/IMAG1097.jpg" width="320" /></a>For the <b>second method</b> on the right, I recommend using a thin paper such as wrapping paper, dictionary or old book pages, newspaper etc. Wrap the candle and adhere together with sticky tape. You can leave it as is, as I have done, or you can then use a hair dryer to gently melt the candle onto the paper for an almost transparent effect.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
For the <b>third method</b> in the second left photo, I used the double sided sticky tape to create lines around the candles - I eyed the spaces in between each line. I then gently patted glitter onto the tape, being careful to brush away stray bits with a paint brush.<br />

Also check to see how sticky the wax on the candle is, as it is quite humid where I am today the candle was a bit stickier than usual. <br />
<br />

When I was satisfied with my pine cones and candles, I played around with them until I found a setting I liked.As you can see in the below pictures, the candles and pine cones look effective separately, but I think look that little bit more festive when done together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBs7E8WDatSmA1ap3Os-Jc3lhaKDjMxNeJ4FUNQq_wA6s5T1yeltUhxHiAZvpxl28A6xq1nwfMc9wiU1772SfrduBACV97kCQTxO7mwzlI278uUw5prKEuOIR3z23gxqm47g8bq0g2mF8Z/s1600/IMAG1106.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="119" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBs7E8WDatSmA1ap3Os-Jc3lhaKDjMxNeJ4FUNQq_wA6s5T1yeltUhxHiAZvpxl28A6xq1nwfMc9wiU1772SfrduBACV97kCQTxO7mwzlI278uUw5prKEuOIR3z23gxqm47g8bq0g2mF8Z/s200/IMAG1106.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>I used some old boxes to put the candles on, placed the pine trees in front balanced on a box and each other to ensure they sat up straight. I then placed the tinsel around them to hide the boxes and to add that bit of Christmas cheer. <br />

Sometimes you strike it lucky finding some gorgeous buttons, a vintage bed sheet, a few balls of yarn, maybe a magazine you've never seen or a retro clothing pattern that you have just the right fabrics to make that up in at home. (Once I found a complete unused Gocco Printing Set for $15! SCORE) After happily forking over your money for said lucky crafty finds, you may find yourself skipping happily down the street daydreaming of the loveliness you now possess and all the possibilities of what you can make.............Or maybe that's just me.<br />
BUT sometimes you leave empty handed. Not having found anything remotely interesting, <br />
<br />
Today I will share with you my first trip to the AMAZING crafty opshop that is The Needlecraft Emporium and Fabric Cave, located at Crowle Home in North Ryde.<br />
The Opshop is run by <a href="http://www.achieveaustralia.org.au/" target="_blank">Achieve Australia</a> and is called <a href="http://www.achieveaustralia.org.au/vintage_and_value_enterprises.php" target="_blank">Vintage and Value Enterprises</a>. The money raised by the opshop goes towards helping the people who live at Crowle Home and enriching their lives. Many of the volunteers are relatives of people who live or learn at Crowle House.<br />
It is only open Mondays and Fridays from 9am till 2pm. They are also open one Sunday a month, but check the website for which one. <br />
I went on a Monday, and only the needlecraft emporium and fabric cave were open but if you get to go on a Friday, they also have the second hand bookshop, plant shop and preloved clothing shop open as well.<br />
The first room I visited was the Needlecraft Emporium. All I can say is WOW. The room is filled with everything a crafty person could ever want (and more).<br />

All the fabric is more than a metre in length, and priced between $3-$5 a metre. I bought some cottons for making skirts.<br />
The range of fabric is amazing, There are cottons, satins, stretch and other fabrics as well.I don't think it is possible to walk out of there empty handed.<br />
The staff are so friendly and generous and genuinely interested in what you have chosen and what you are going to make. I hope to take a few things back with me to show them what I made.<br />
<br />
I honestly can't tell you how much I enjoyed visiting and the pictures do not do the place justice. I could have spent much longer there (and much more money too).<br />
<br />
So I did my happy skip back to the car, and tried to concentrate on driving home, and not on all the lovely things I just bought.<br />
